Hazleton comes across as so amiable and earnest that one wishes her labors had been more successful, but kind hearts and good intentions don't always make for good books. She's working in a tough genre, and it got the best of her." -- Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World
First Line

It was all Monty Python's fault. I'd been on the road since seven in the morning, and by early evening was still three hours from home.

Publisher Notes: Buy Automotive book
Leaving her home in Seattle in midsummer to drive "the long way round" to the Detroit auto show, Lesley Hazleton embarks on a five-month journey to visit the holy places for cars -- where they are raced, displayed, crashed, tested, and made -- as she seeks to understand our deep fascination with automobiles. Her quest takes her on a road trip that teaches her not only about cars and the peculiar passions of car lovers but also about herself. A committed environmentalist in thrall to the internal combustion engine, Hazleton explores her own worship of speed during assaults on the landspeed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats; negotiates the famed off-road Rubicon Trail across the Sierras; finds the exact spot where James Dean died in his Porsche Spyder; and attends a crash conference in Albuquerque, where her discovery that "when metal and flesh collide, metal always wins" sheds light on our erotic fascination with the automobile. She crushes cars in a Houston junkyard; works the nightshift at the Saturn plant in Tennessee; and in Detroit, turns away from the glitz and gleam of new metal to watch what happens when a car is driven into a million pounds of concrete. Along the way she corresponds with a class of eight-year-olds, befriends a priest who fixes his parishioners' cars, and encounters people and places where cars are created, worshiped, celebrated, and even feared. Throughout her journey, Hazleton's ability to make us see and smell and hear what is unique about each place she visits keeps us riveted, eager to move on with her to the next town on the map. Halfway through this extraordinary adventure, Hazleton's father, the man who taught her to drive, dies suddenly, and her trip becomes a journey of grief and memory, a deeply personal odyssey that after thirteen thousand miles almost costs her her own life on an ice-bound highway. What begins as a romance takes her deep into the heartland of obsession, evolving into a meditation on life and death as she delves into the soul of a nation and its machine. In this moving and captivating memoir, a British expatriate, car junky, and veteran travel writer takes the wheel and crosses the country in search of the elusive American dream. Along the way, she rediscovers herself and what America is all about.

The automotive book introduces the theory and operating principles of gas turbine engines. The fundamental concepts of the turbine engines design are spelled out. The primary systems and accessories of the gas turbine engine are also discussed. The automotive book provides an excellent foundation in gas turbine engines and jet propulsion theory for aerospace or mechanical engineers. It is presented at the graduate and senior undergraduate level and provides a comprehensive coverage of all the fundamentals in a reader-friendly manner that also works beautifully as a professional reference. The automotive book is well written and easy to follow with clear explanations and numerous illustrations and pictures to reinforce the basic concepts, trends, and design examples. The automotive book also has several worked examples and many homework problems all which help the reader to grasp and apply the concepts. This is one of the best books available on the market on gas turbine engines and is therefore highly recommended.

This is the best automotive textbook written on the modeling and performance prediction of gas turbine engines. A systematic method is used to model a variety of engines from the basic turbojet to the advanced afterburning turbofan used in modern fighters. Performance predictions include the effect of engine controls - a unique feature. Turbomachinery design includes structural considerations. This automotivebook is a great textbook for junior/senior level courses in aerospace/mechanical engineering. It is being used for a basic course in gas turbine engine and a followup course in engine component design...

bought the book "Elements of Gas Turbine Propulsion" in August of 1999 and I still read it almost everyday. It is a very interesting book, but it has a serious flaw in that there are so many errors, it appears that the editor(s) were asleep or out to lunch. It was a great disservice to the author, as I think he was shortchanged by the publisher. Being a former member of the USAF, myself I feel that his work was more meticulous than this. Perhaps the publisher was in such a hurry to hit the presses at all costs, that this is the result. This seems to be the trend in recent years. I believe that one of the major networks did and expose regarding major publishing house oversights in this area.

Links for automotive books as : http://astore.amazon.com/buy-automotive-book-20

(TORONTO) – The 2005 Toyota Sequoia full-sized SUV is more powerful, more luxurious, and safer than ever. (Automotive Book)The potent V8 engine has been enhanced with Toyota’s advanced VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) for a significant boost in power, making it an uncompromising choice for owners who want both rugged, go-anywhere SUV capability and the ride and amenities of a premium sedan. As well as making it more luxurious, the curtain shield airbags which extend to the second row, now include roll-sensors, making Sequoia even safer for driver and passengers.

“We’ve drawn on Toyota’s long, successful history of building trucks for a multitude of purposes to make Sequoia a powerful and capable SUV,” said Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada Inc. “We then combined that all-terrain muscle and confidence with an exceptional level of ride comfort and standard amenities that takes Sequoia’s versatility to a completely new level.”

(Automotive Book) For 2005, the double overhead camshaft, 32-valve, 4.7-litre V8 engine that powers both Sequoia SR5 and Sequoia Limited is equipped with VVT-i. When combined with Toyota’s other advanced engine technologies, it means this powerplant becomes even more robust, producing 282 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 325 lb/ft of torque at 3,400 rpm (compared to 240 horsepower and 315 lb/ft of torque for the previous engine). As effective as it is powerful, this engine also provides Sequoia with competitive fuel efficiency.

The added power is harnessed by a new 5-speed electronically-controlled (ECT) automatic with lock-up torque converter, overdrive cancel switch and transmission cooler. For maximum ease of operation, on- and off-road, Sequoia is equipped with Multi-Mode 4WD which features shift-on-the-fly from rear-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive. Multi-Mode 4WD’s Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD) provides all the benefits of part-time 4WD but adds the capability of running in 4WD mode on dry pavement, similar to a full-time 4WD system.

Sequoia’s ground clearance of 270 mm (10.6 inches) means excellent off-road capability, while a low overall height makes it easy to drive into garages or parking lots with height restrictions.
Added Standard Features For Added Comfort, Luxury Toyota’s Sequoia has always been distinguished as much for its luxurious amenities and refined ride as for its rugged utility. The new model year boosts this reputation even further, with a host of standard equipment.
A new TRD OffRoad Sport package is part of SR5’s standard complement: · adjustable rear air suspension · tubular running boards · leather seating surfaces · heated front power seats · cruise and audio controls mounted on the leather steering wheel · unique 16-inch alloy wheels with P265/70R16 white lettered tires

The Luxury Package now becomes standard equipment on every Sequoia Limited: · adjustable rear air suspension · Optitron instrumentation · second-row captain’s chairs with removable centre console · memory settings for driver’s seat and exterior mirrors · wood grain interior trim
All of this is added to an outstanding range of luxury and comfort features, including dual automatic climate control, integrated garage door opener, anti-theft system, and a full complement of power accessories including keyless entry; cruise control; power windows, door locks and tailgate window; and outside mirrors.
A JBL Premium Sound AM/FM/Cassette/CD player with in glass diversity antenna, steering wheel audio controls and separate audio controls for the rear seat is standard across the lineup.
Sequoia Limited’s standard rear seat entertainment system features a DVD player with overhead 7-inch LCD monitor. Sound can be shared with the entire cabin, or directed to headphones so other passengers can enjoy the premium JBL sound system with 6-disc in-dash CD player. The system also permits passengers to plug in their own video game system. Two sets of wireless headphones are standard equipment.
Thoughtful Interior is Roomy and Comfortable Sequoia’s spacious interior provides comfortable seating for eight on the SR5 model, and for seven on the Limited. The second row of three seats on the SR5 model is a convenient 60/40 split and either side can be folded flat or tumbled forward. The third row of three seats split 50/50 and may be slid forward, folded flat, tumbled or removed. This versatile configurability, combined with Sequoia’s low, wide and flat floor, ensures easy loading.
Sequoia is designed for comfort and convenience. Ten cupholders are strategically placed throughout the cabin. The large centre front console has a built-in memo pad. Grocery bag hooks and cargo net hooks are fitted to both sides of the rear luggage area. The sunvisors extend for increased screening when used at the side, and Limited models have illuminated vanity mirrors plus dual sunvisors so that both the front and side windows may be shaded. The rear passenger windows and rear quarter panel windows have heat-absorbing privacy glass.
Sequoia may also be fitted with a dealer-installed Rear Obstacle Sensing System to make reversing even safer, particularly in situations where visibility is limited or exiting the vehicle is difficult. The system detects objects and obstructions within its sensing range, and gives the driver both a visual and auditory alert inside the cabin. Easily and invisibly installed behind the rear bumper cover, the sensor is not affected by any weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold.
Engineered to Expect The Unexpected Sequoia is built with advanced electronically-controlled driveline, stability and traction systems. These include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Toyota’s Active Traction Control System (A-TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Multi-Mode 4WD.
VSC enhances cornering stability by sensing oversteer and understeer situations and helping to correct them by controlling engine output and brakes to dampen the unstable condition.
On slippery surfaces or during rugged 4WD off-road situations, A-TRAC works closely with the ABS and Engine Control Module (ECM), using the sensors and actuators to apply braking force and restore traction to a slipping wheel while the ECM modulates power. The torque that would have been lost through slippage is then distributed to the remaining three wheels, achieving an effect similar to that of three Limited Slip Differentials. A-TRAC is automatically disengaged in 4WD Low Range.
Working with the ABS, EBD modulates brake pressure to prevent rear wheel lockup and maintain directional stability and steerability on slippery surfaces. Using wheel speed sensors, EBD calculates the difference in speed between the front and rear wheels and operates the brake actuators to control brake pressure. This balances front/rear braking force distribution more effectively than traditional mechanical proportioning valves.
Sequoia’s independent front suspension features double wishbones, and the adjustable rear air suspension on Sequoia adjusts ride height based on input from the load sensors, ensuring that ride quality and stability are not compromised regardless of load.
Power-assisted, ventilated front and rear disc brakes combined with variable power-assist rack-and-pinion steering provides sure, safe stops and precise steering response.
A new tire pressure monitoring system helps drivers keep tires at the optimum pressure for safety and ride comfort.
Maximum Protection Means Maximum Safety Sequoia is one of the few full-sized SUVs to be equipped with standard side- and curtain shield airbags in addition to dual front airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags. For 2005, the front airbags deploy according to seat position and impact severity, while the curtain shield airbags are now roll-sensing, offering added protection. Occupants are also protected by 3-point seatbelts in all seating positions. Front seatbelts employ pre-tensioners and force limiters and are height-adjustable. All seatbelts except the driver’s are the ALR/ELR (automatic/emergency locking retractor) switchable type.
Five Child Restraint System (CRS) tether anchors are provided as well as ISO lower-fixed points for three child seats.
Sequoia’s high-strength body is designed to absorb and distribute force through the entire frame and minimize deformation of the cabin area. All passenger doors are equipped with side impact beams and a special structure that protects against head impact is built into the front and centre pillars and the roof side rails.
Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the potent 2005 Sequoia SR5 V8, with its outstanding list of new equipment, is $59,530. The luxurious Sequoia Limited V8, which received additional new equipment valued at $3,500, increases in price by just $2,235 to $65,855.
Sequoia is covered by Toyota’s no deductible, no transfer fee, comprehensive warranty that covers the entire vehicle for 3 years/60,000 kilometres. Power train components are covered for 5 years/100,000 kilometres, major emission control components for 8 years/130,000 kilometres and corrosion perforation for five years with unlimited distance.
Toyota also provides 24-hour Roadside Assistance for all models; help is just a phone call away at 1-888-TOYOTA-8. Roadside emergency services include battery boost, lockout service, fuel delivery, tire change, winching, and even towing. Optional Extended Care Protection (ECP) is also available, which includes travel planning and trip interruption assistance, vehicle rental help, lubrication maintenance, and mechanical protection for up to 6 years/200,000 km of 17 major mechanical component groups.

Automotive BOOK REVIEW:

Drive the Best for the Price: How to Buy a Used Automobile, SUV, or Minivan and Save Money
by Kyle Busch

The automotive book contains valuable information to assist readers (single parents, college students, families, executives, seniors who are on a fixed income, etc.) to get more transportation enjoyment and value for a given amount of money.

Concerning transportation, the Kyle Busch, the author began on the ground floor, literally, at the dirt, mud and asphalt, then, he progressed upward. In 1975, at the age of 15, he purchased his first automobile--a used 1968 Volkswagen Beetle. During the '70s and '80s, American, European, and Japanese vehicles sharpened and refined his knowledge of used vehicles.

In 1991 Busch paid $2,600 for a used vehicle that a private owner had driven 82,000 miles. A short time later, he landed a job that included a company car for traveling a seven-county territory. During the job interview, however, his supervisor forgot to mention that new employees were required to drive their own vehicles during the first year of the job.

Since he needed the job, the author started driving his vehicle 500-800 miles on back roads and interstates each week for work; and after six months of use (he was paid mileage when driving the vehicle for work), the automobile paid for itself. Upon completing the first year of the job, Busch decided to keep driving his vehicle at work and eventually, it returned several times its $2,600 purchase price.

The automotive book is available in e-book and print editions and is easily affordable with prices ranging from $11.95 to $17.95. The information contained in the book will save the used vehicle buyer many times the book's purchases price. Furthermore, the book can be applied to save money on more than one occasion.

Kyle's Corner - Tips You Can Use to Better Cruise The following information will help you to get more driving pleasure and save money on your next used vehicle purchase.

1. Take the time to really identify your transportation needs. Buying used transportation that satisfies transportation needs to the greatest extent results in increased driving pleasure. Also, you will be less likely to get tired of the vehicle and want to sell it after only a year or two.
2. Consult the April (vehicle edition) issue of Consumer Reports at a public library. The frequency-of-repair information will help you to focus upon used vehicles that will likely need fewer repairs. Also, consult the back issues of motoring magazines and publications (Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Road & Track, MotorWeek, etc.) to find out how a used vehicle tested when it was new.
3. At the public library, consult the N.A.D.A. - National Automotive Dealer's Association Official Used Car Guide. Also, checkout the vehicle classified sections of the largest newspapers in the United States. Vehicle price trends begin in the major cities and then progress to other areas of the country.
4. Become aware of when a vehicle will be redesigned. Get an additional price break by purchasing a vehicle (the previous design) six months to one year after the new vehicle design hits the market. Try to avoid buying a vehicle that will be redesigned soon after you have purchased it or its price will drop on you.
5. Keep in mind that there are several used vehicle sources from which to choose: private owners, rental car companies (some rent sport-utility vehicles and minivans), Internet sources, bank repossessions, company vehicles, off lease vehicles at dealerships, etc. Be certain to inform each source that you are considering the others.
6. Remember that information, knowledge, and understanding are the keys to driving the best vehicle for the price

automotive Book Review: The Car Design Yearbook By Stephen NewburyMerrell Publishers Ltd, New York, NYReviewed By Carey Russ

A renaissance has been taking place in automotive book design over the past few years. The industry is now at a stage where good design is vitally important, and not only for high-priced sports and luxury cars. Concept cars from the international auto show circuit have a way of appearing virtually unchanged in showrooms, and automotive book design can appeal not only to the car enthusiast but to artists and others as well. Surprisingly, until recently design received only a passing mention in the annual publications covering the auto industry, most of which are primarily concerned with motorsports. When The Car Design Yearautomotive book 1 was published last year, it filled a void for the automotive book enthusiast.

And it appears that The Car Design Yearautomotive book 1 was successful, because The Car Design Yearbook 2 has just been published. Like The Car Design Yearbook 1, it is a European publication, published by Merrell Publishers Limited (New York office: 49 West 24th St., New York 10010 NY). It's written by Stephen Newbury, and can be found in your local bookstore or from any of the online booksellers. (automotive book)

As with The Car Design Yearbook 1, The Car Design Yearautomotive book 2 is an overview of concept and production vehicles that were new or significantly redesigned during the year previous to its publication - in this case late 2002 and most of 2003. It covers all new production cars worldwide - ``clean sheet'' designs or those with major generational changes as opposed to the more common minor sheetmetal and specification yearly changes - and all concept cars made for the international auto shows.

In a delightfully dry British style, author Newbury provides clear, concise, insightful commentary on and basic specification for 110 vehicles that debuted in 2002 and 2003, as well as an exploration of design trends and profiles of important designers. There are plenty of well-chosen color photos of all vehicles, and of the chosen designers and their most important cars. New this year is a commentary on the history of and reasoning behind concept cars. It makes for fascinating reading, and is followed by examples of concept vehicles and the production machines that evolved from them.

The cars, trucks, and other vehicles described range in alphabetical order from the Acura TSX sports sedan to the production Volvo VCC ``Versatility Concept Car.'' Between lies both beauty and bizarreness. There are production vehicles that you've already seen on the streets of the U.S., like the Cadillac SRX, the Chrysler Pacifica, the latest Ford F150, and imports like the Honda Accord and Lexus RX330. There are Japanese and European production vehicles not imported here, from the Audi A3 to the TVR T350. And there are exotics, such as the Ferrari Enzo and Lamborghini Gallardo.

As last year, some of the most fascinating things (and, yes, ``things'' is the correct word) covered are the outright no-production-intended concept vehicles. With a lack of truly bizarre Japanese entries, this category is milder than it was last year. But the French and Italians provide plenty of visual entertainment. The Fiat Marrakech looks like a Jolly for the 21st Century, minus the fringed surrey top. The Citroen C-Airdream gets top billing and this year's cover shot, redefining beauty and aerodynamic style in much the way the company's DS sedans did over 40 years ago.

There are many more creations besides these inside of The Car Design Yearbook 2. An informative and entertaining read, it belongs on the bookshelf of any car enthusiast.
